The remains of various outbuildings provided the potential for creating interesting spaces in this former saddle-maker’s cottage. A sunny courtyard enclosed on three sides leads off the sittingroom while steps opposite the kitchen door lead up into the main part of the garden.
The raised terrace leads off an existing area of brick paving and is laid in natural stone edged with cottage garden plants. Stepping stones lead to the workshop at the back of the oak framed garage, which is accessed from the garden over a sleeper ‘bridge’.
Trained fruit trees grow along the fence of the potager behind the garage, screened by trellis planted with clematis and roses. A brick edged gravel path defines the lawn creating an arc across the garden, a second path cutting through the haven of perennials and grasses providing an island for a garden bench facing the house. The dry stone wall was repaired by the owner using local Cotwold stone.
